Oh hey, I’m Austin.
I paint the Midwest sky. That vast, ever-changing presence most of us move through without stopping to really look at.
Growing up here, I was always drawn to the landscape. Staring out the window on a long car ride looking out across the vast rolling fields wondering what lies beyond. The anticipation and weight of an approaching storm. The specific gold of late November light. The way a sunset will do something extraordinary for about all of four minutes and then it's gone forever.
I started painting because I wanted to hold onto those moments, and somewhere along the way I realized that the act of looking carefully, of actually stopping and seeing, matters about as much to me as anything I put on canvas.
That's what this work is really about. Not just the paintings, but the invitation inside them. To slow down, look up, and notice how extraordinary the natural world is and to reconnect with it just a bit more.
I work primarily in oils, painting both in the studio and out in the landscape itself. There's something irreplaceable about standing in a field while the light shifts dramatically as I try to capture it before it's gone. That field work and direct observation leads to my studio work, helping shape my voice in ways no photo ever really could.
If that sounds like your kind of thing, come along for the ride. Not sure if we’ll be stopping soon, but I’m sure the view’ll be worth it.
